If we are successful in toppling the obstacles, then it will be possible to use the path in order to get to previously inaccessible places. But where there is no path at all, there is literally no way to move forward. In this sense, laws regarding manumission have often been necessary but not sufficient mechanisms for escaping enslavement and realizing freedom. The comparative case of Virginia, Louisiana, and Cuba is revealing as it shows changes over time in how blackness and freedom were constructed ideologically and practically and how officials in Virginia won, comparatively speaking, the effort to almost fully equate having some African blood to being enslaved.

Domingue/Haiti descendants and consider the ways current immigrants’ 18 ( 18 ) American Routes experiences mirror them, the discussion reaffirms the importance of resuscitating alternative historiographies of people of color and of moving away from reliance on analytical tools originally developed to make sense of the situation of European immigrants. Finally, after considering the implications of the book for the ways we study immigration, we conclude by drawing some practical lessons for working toward greater racial equality within areas characterized by layered racial systems that contain alternative social and political logics.

This includes countries such as Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Argentina, Venezuela, Brazil, and the US territory of Puerto Rico, among others. The composite Latin/Caribbean system proposed here is a looser, though still relevant, fit for parts of Central and South America where there are very heavy indigenous populations such as Bolivia or Guatemala. Though the fit is looser, however, it is still relevant in that these countries are characterized by much less rigid understandings of whiteness and blackness, and by less clearly drawn color lines than is the case in the United States.
